This article is about the South African gumboot dance. This dance originated from urban working Africans. Working in shaft mines, many workers were under supplied and one of the supplies given were gumboots. As time passed, many workers sang songs of the hardships that they faced. Given the only things that they had, the boots and their voice, they created a dance and song to communicate with one another in the mines.
This article struck me because of how awesome this dance originated. Often culture is not created in the current times, and is often originated from far ancestors. It also interested me because I found it odd that people can create cultures when in deep stress, constant dangers, and in horrible conditions. The fact that this dance was created fairly recently compared to other cultural dances, I thought that this was really cool.
This passage applies to culture because it has meaning behind it and was created by a regional group. Culture forms among groups of people and often does not become popularized. It also applies to culture because the dance has meaning the the South African people. This article is a great example of how culture can be created and that, considering the wide culture we already have, perhaps we even make our own.
